The practice of theatre improvisation (improv), an art form used for decades primarily as entertainment, enhances life skills. A growing body of anecdotal and research evidence shows that using improv in psychotherapy benefits both clients and therapists!

Founded in 1984, Rehearsals for Growth (RfG) is a playful, Family Systems-based Action Method of applying improv to psychotherapy, especially to relationship therapy. Viewed as a Drama Therapy of relationships, RfG facilitates change by playfully exploring alternative roles through dramatic enactment.

RfG can be combined with almost all psychotherapeutic approaches, provides vivid, immediate experiences and reaches all populations, including those who do not respond well to talk-only methods.

RfG teaches you to:
• Create that “feel safe” environment necessary for your clients to take risks for growth
• Access spontaneity through improvisation
• Promote attentiveness and validation both of self and others
• Apply assessment skills using non-verbal cues
• Increase your own vitality, passion, and creativity!

Following a brief orienting talk, participants in this 3-hour TeleDrama module will engage voluntarily in both group and paired improv enactments to experience the challenging fun of responding in-the-moment to unusual, fictional scenarios. The enactments chosen are also useful as psychotherapy interventions After each enactment there will be opportunities to share and process your experiences. Brief questions will be answered regarding the clinical uses of improv and RfG’s close connections to Psychodrama.
