Improv for Therapists: A Playful Orientation
This module has run but is not a prerequisite for any of the other three below

Theatre Improvisation (improv) is a practice of simultaneously activating our spontaneity and our engagement with others while performing with them. When improvising, players learn to reduce their reliance on controlling the future and experience a playful, risky aliveness in the present moment. For many years, improvisational practice by therapists has been successfully applied to psychotherapy while also conferring several professional and personal benefits to the Self of the therapist.
…But you can’t apply improv before experiencing it yourself! This module, the first in a series of four, is recommended both as a stand-alone learning experience and as preparation for using improv in your clinical practice. Participants voluntarily try out improv exercises, linking these experiences to self-learning. After each improv enactment, we’ll be processing our experiences, tying in orienting concepts and practical tips. We shall also compare and contrast therapeutic improv with psychodrama.
Optional reading material will be supplied in advance of the module.

May 21, 2020: (Tele’Drama Module 2 of 4)

Improv for Therapists: Validating Others

Foundational to improv is the process of Validating others’ offers (anything done or said) in order to co-create a fictional world. This is known as the “Yes-And” rule. Attending to both the Accepting (validating) and the Blocking (invalidating) of offers has important applications in assessing and altering relationship functioning, both in life and therapy.
Participants voluntarily try out improv exercises chosen by the instructor to discover the differences in “feel” between while accepting or blocking offers, both from one’s own imagination and from other persons. After each improv enactment, we’ll: first, process our enactment experiences; next, tie in orienting concepts; then, discuss the application of the exercise to clinical cases; and last, offer practical tips. Time will be made available for discussion and questions.

Optional reading material will be supplied in advance of the module.

May 28, 2020: (Tele’Drama Module 3 of 4)

Improv for Therapists: Adventures in Story-Making

We know much of the world through narratives, or stories. Compared with stories communicated only verbally (storytelling), story-making during improv enactments creates a more vivid and impactful experience.
Participants voluntarily try out improv exercises chosen by the instructor for experiencing the power and opportunities of enacting improv games with narrative structures. After each improv enactment, we’ll: first, process our enactment experiences; next, tie in orienting concepts; then, discuss the application of the exercise to clinical cases; and last, offer practical tips. Time will be made available for discussion and questions.
Optional reading material will be supplied in advance of the module.

June 4, 2020: (Tele’Drama Module 4 of 4)

Improv for Therapists: Performing Status
In improv, “Status” does not refer to prestige but instead to acts or performances which signify social importance. We all use and are influenced by status performances but are mostly unaware of how pervasive and powerful are status maneuvers, acts in which its performer intends to alter the status of self in relation to others.
Participants voluntarily try out improv exercises chosen by the instructor for experiencing the effects of performing status maneuvers. After each improv enactment, we’ll: first, process our enactment experiences; next, tie in orienting concepts; then, discuss the application of the exercise to clinical cases; and last, offer practical tips. Time will be made available for discussion and questions.
Optional reading material will be supplied in advance of the module.
