In his Impromptu Man: J.L. Moreno and the Origins of Psychodrama, Encounter Culture, and the Social Network (2014), Dr. Jonathan Moreno discusses the importance of sociometry and its interrelation with psychodrama. He shares Dr. Moreno's words that “psychodrama without sociometry is blind.”
Sociometry is often used and recognized as a warm-up to the psychodrama enactment; however, sociometry participates during the entire enactment; or perhaps it is more accurate to say that the psychodrama enactment is entirely based on sociometry. When the protagonist is choosing auxiliaries; selecting past scenes and memories; measuring the intensity of their feelings or the impact of the proposed doubling; observing their life scenes and the significant others from a mirror position; exploring new roles and future projections; discovering new perspectives; evaluating shifts and changes in their relationships and life; etc., the wide array of sociometric explorations participate in the psychodramatic enactment – sociograms, locograms, spectrograms, role diagrams, social atoms, tele and more. This knowledge leads to an advanced awareness of the importance of knowing the philosophy and the methodology of sociometry, inter-twined with psychodrama and group psychotherapy.
This training module will focus on recognizing and introducing sociometry into the actual enactment during a psychodrama session, and how this knowledge and practice can assist the psychodrama director, the protagonist, the auxiliaries and the audience.
